When you first started your business, you probably had to do everything. You got stuck in working on all the day-to-day details and kept everything in your head. As your business grows this has to change. If you keep running your growing business the same way as your small business, you are in danger of becoming the biggest bottle-neck for growth. You simply run out of time, energy and even brain space. 
 
As your company grows you need to start stepping back and look at your company from a different angle. This is either referred to as helicopter view but is also known as systems thinking or clarity of purpose. It involves looking at your business as a whole, not just the minute details. You’re going to ask questions such as: “What’s our overall strategy for growth?”; “Are we investing in equipment or staff?”; or “Should we diversify our offering?” 
 
By taking a helicopter view, you rise above the details of a situation and see them in the context of the whole organisation. This doesn’t mean losing sight of the details but seeing them in a different light. To add another metaphor, it’s looking at all the trees in the context of the whole forest, not just seeing each tree individually. 
 
How a helicopter view can help your business 
You will also want to look at systems and structures you need to improve or put in place so that the business can run smoothly. The implementation of these new systems will then be overseen and executed by members of your team. Delegating these responsibilities to the right people will get the job done quicker; you don’t need to micromanage the execution. 
 
As for the information held in the business owners head, this needs to be downloaded into systems that are accessible by all relevant personnel of the company. This could be key clients’ birthdays to send out cards (done by the customer service department; of course, you can still sign the card!), who deserves a raise and why (implemented by your HR department) or which software should be installed next (planned and executed by your IT department). 
 
Overall, the business owner becomes more and more involved in big-picture strategy decisions. Most, if not all, day-to-day operational tasks are delegated. 
 
The helicopter view is not only a great tool for strategy. It can also be used for problem solving. Rather than looking at the isolated issue, take a step back and see how a problem developed in the first place. Is it a symptom of a larger issue that needs to be resolved? Again, it could be that new systems need to be implemented so that problems like this one don’t occur in the future.
