Taking a Helicopter view of your business
Posted on 13th November 2019 at 11:48
Do you ever feel like you can’t see the wood for the trees? Does the fate of your business ever feel like it’s been left to the whims of chance? Do you ever feel like, no matter how hard you try to maintain control of your business’ operations, marketing strategy and cash flow, you’re sitting atop a bucking bronco waiting for the inevitable moment when it throws you loose?
The good news is that you’re not alone.
Many an entrepreneur just like you are plagued by the knowledge that all is not well with their SME… but can’t put a finger on why. This is part of the reason why many businesses of all shapes and sizes require consultants. Not only do they bring specific skills and experience to bear on solving strategic and operational issues your business faces. They also bring something potentially even more useful… an outside perspective.
The best view is rarely from the middle
Imagine you’re standing on the pitch of a crowded football stadium. Everywhere you look there are hordes of people moving and shifting. Do you think you could count how many people were there from your vantage point? Probably not. Could you count them if you were circling the stadium in a helicopter? It’d be tricky, but you’d stand a much better chance. The exact same goes for getting a useful overview of your business. Often you’re too bogged down in the operational necessities of getting from one day to the next.
Starting up and spinning plates
When starting up a business, entrepreneurs are usually working with small teams on limited budgets and, of course, learning as they go. Thus, they find themselves wearing multiple hats operationally speaking handling everything from liaising with vendors to managing their Twitter feed. They become whatever the business needs them to be at any given moment. And as they keep up with the changing demands of their infant enterprises, they find that they simply can’t get off that metaphorical stadium floor to a secure vantage point.
Getting lost in the operational fog
The chaotic nature of the average startup leads in many cases to entrepreneurs crafting their business as they go along, creating policies on the fly as and when they need them. Thus, they get lost in the operational fog of the day-today. Their days become a series of discrete tasks designed to help them keep their head above water with little (if any) time set aside for strategy and the business of management.
Thus, policies can become unfit for purpose and operational efficiency is severely bottlenecked. Even if they prove popular with their target market, their growth is seriously stunted by lack of proper resource allocation, marketing, strategy and sufficient human resources.
Got growth in mind? Get away from the front lines and into your office!
With that in mind, business owners who are serious about growth can find that their ambition exceeds their capability. If this sounds achingly familiar, you need to tear yourself away from the coalface and spend more time on your office. Spend more time looking at data and spotting trends, getting to know your market and your competitors. Trust in your team to handle the day-to-day, and don’t be afraid to invest in personnel if you have growth in mind.
This is infinitely more conducive to getting the right kind of perspective for sustainable growth and success.
